Abstract

Forty years ago, the diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was not as widespread as it is today. According to statistics, a quarter of the world's population suffers from NAFLD. Moreover, this disease is observed not only in adults but also in children, as obesity is actively developing in younger (40-70%) and older (17%) school-age children. Among other diseases, NAFLD accounts for 20-30% of the population in European countries, 20-46% in the USA, and 12-27.3% in Asian countries. This pathology includes several independent types of diseases that sequentially progress: fatty liver steatosis, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis of the liver, and the development of hepatocellular carcinoma as its complication.

The problem of timely detection and proper treatment of NAFLD is very urgent due to the absence of clinical symptoms and, consequently, insufficient motivation of patients to change their lifestyle and undergo medication therapy. Biliary sludge is considered by the European Society of Gastroenterology as a latent (stone-free) stage of gallstone disease - the only stage of the disease that requires therapeutic treatment.
