Abstract
Introduction. Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is a type of glaucomatous optic neuropathy in which visual function deteriorates despite normal or low intraocular pressure (IOP). Southwestern Uzbekistan demonstrates a high prevalence of arterial hypotension, which may aggravate glaucomatous damage.
Materials and Methods. A cohort of 42 patients (84 eyes) with various glaucoma stages was followed. A full ophthalmological assessment included visual acuity, tonometry, perimetry, ophthalmoscopy, OCT, retinal tomography, and ocular rheography. Treatment consisted of a fixed combination of timolol and latanoprost, systemic neuroprotection (citicoline, mildronate), and angiotherapy.
Results. Visual acuity was stabilized in 58.3% of eyes; visual fields remained stable in 33.3% and improved in 30.9%. Central scotomas decreased or disappeared. The rheographic index improved in 85.7% of eyes. However, patients with systemic hypotension had persistently high IOP intolerance indices.
Conclusion. Combined topical and systemic therapy leads to functional stabilization in most NTG cases. Arterial hypotension negatively influences disease progression and should be carefully managed.
