Evaluation of Chess Training Efficiency in Individuals with Musculoskeletal Disorders

Abstract

Introduction. Musculoskeletal disorders significantly limit mobility and quality of life, especially in individuals with congenital anomalies, injuries, and conditions such as cerebral palsy. This study investigates the effectiveness of combining chess training with physical exercises (e.g., Nordic walking) in the rehabilitation of young people with such disorders, focusing on cognitive, psychological, and physical improvements.


Objective. To assess the effectiveness of chess training combined with physical activity (in particular, Nordic walking) as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for young people with musculoskeletal disorders, emphasizing cognitive, psychological, and physical recovery, and to develop recommendations for implementing this approach in rehabilitation institutions.


Materials and Methods. The study involved 25 young participants with musculoskeletal disorders who completed a 6-month program including chess training and physical exercises (Nordic walking, gymnastics, coordination and fine motor skills training). Assessment was conducted across cognitive, psychological, and physical domains, showing the positive impact of the combined approach.


Results. Most participants showed improvement in chess skills (88%), cognitive functions (79%), and psychological state, including reduced anxiety (73%). Additional benefits included enhanced hand motor skills (65%), improved posture, muscle tone, and overall physical endurance.


Conclusion. The study demonstrated that chess training is an effective tool for cognitive and psychological rehabilitation in individuals with musculoskeletal disorders, enhancing memory, attention, and reducing anxiety. When combined with physical activity such as Nordic walking, it supports posture correction and increased physical endurance. Individualized approaches and the integration of such programs into rehabilitation centers can significantly improve quality of life and social integration for these individuals.
